I don't know what took them so long to do this. ESPN has moved all but three races of its package off ABC. The Saturday races at Bristol, Richmond, and Charlotte will be on ABC. Other than that, all the other races will be on ESPN.
This will be a true throwback in TV coverage. We will have the last race of the season on ESPN and Jerry Punch in the pits and a guy named Jarrett, although it is Dale, in the booth.
This is the backstory. The current NASCAR contracts end in 2014. I suspected this would happen back when the last TV contracts were signed, and I am almost sure this will happen. ESPN will try to acquire the entire Sprint Cup Series schedule with maybe a race here and there on ABC. The Daytona 500 probably would air on ABC, a place where it has not been in more than three decades.
Think Richard Petty and David Pearson back in 1976. The entire race was not on the Wide World of Sports, just the beginning, middle, and end of it. That was the last time it was really on ABC. It might return in 2015. This is just my speculation. I welcome everyone's opinion on this interesting topic.
