This can get complicated. A new team from Vermont has a guaranteed spot in the first five races. They bought the points from the #26 team that closed after this season. NASCAR allowed a one-time exception for this since Roush would have no ownership at all in that team.
The rule is it does not allow one team to have ownership of five teams. That includes any part of ownership. That is why the #09 was not given a spot in the first five races last year because EGR would have had some form of ownership of five teams. This leaves three teams in the top 35 last year who points could disappear. The #82, 71, and 09 teams hope that stays the case, because they would get guaranteed spots into the field.
