"Local Short Tracks"

Some of the best racing around comes from local short tracks. I am fortunate enough to live near one, Old Dominion Speedway. It is a 3/8 of a mile oval. Greats such as Richard Petty, Ralph Earnhardt, Ned Jarrett and Junior Johnson have won there in the 60's. Its hard to find a local track with such great tradition. The track has housed many of today's drivers such as Denny Hamlin, Curtis Marcum, and Mark McFarland. If the economy is stopping you from attending a big race, look up local short tracks around your area. Tickets usually range from $5-$15. It might not have the stars or flare of a NASCAR race but the racing is arguably some of the best. The races are usually held on a Friday or Saturday night and feature 5-6 different divisions of racing with Late Models being the main event.

The greatest thing in my opinion is the access to the drivers who put on the show. Before and after the races you can chat with alot of drivers as well as those involved with the teams. Its not uncommon to see little kids getting an oppurtuniy to sit inside the car.... (I say from experience its awesome!) or even future hopefuls getting advice from some of the veteran drivers. While very competitive it is still like a big family. All in all local short tracks put on a great show at an unbelievable price. So next time when your sitting at home on a Friday or Saturday night wondering what to do? Take a drive to your local short track and watch some great racing.
