First of all I'd like to welcome you to my blog entitled "The Free Pass". This blog will touch on all the hot topics from the sport of auto racing and the wacky opinions of the blogger.
I read on Jayski that Danica Patrick would be on ABC's Good Morning America to make a groundbreaking announcement. Most race fans automatically assumed that this announcement would address the worst kept secret in racing that Danica would sign a contract to run selected Nationwide and ARCA races for JR Motorsports in 2010. Of course such a huge announcement would have to be made on a grand stage as Good Morning America. Now when is the last time a racecar driver was on that show muchless to announce plans for 2010? I cannot remember any. I cannot recall Jimmie Johnson who just made NASCAR history by winning 4 straight Cup Championships ever being on this show so that right there tells you the relevance of this announcement
I did not set my alarm to watch this as I have other things to worry about than a random IndyCar driver making an announcement. I turned on Sirius Sattelite Radio to NASCAR channel 128 to hear what was said. I'm sure Rick Benjamin and Chocolate Myers would have the scoop on this. What I heard was rediculous, shocking but yet somehow I wasn't surprised
Danica appeared on the show to announce she had re-signed with Andretti AutoSport (Formerly known as Andretti Green Racing) for 3 years beginning with the 2010 season. Yeah we knew that already. Tell us something we don't know please. She then proceeded to unveil her new paint scheme for 2010. Godaddy.com would adorn the sides of her racecar. Godaddy must be selling a lot of domain names to sponsor Danica and Mark Martin's Cup Car this year. The later I know does not come cheap since they are the primary sponsor for a 50 plus year old driver. Thats another subject for another day in itself.
I was still waiting for news of any kind about this. She announced she would be doing a coat drive. Okay....that's nice. I'm sure nobody turned into the show to find this out although it's a great thing she is doing to help out those people who cannot afford to be warm this winter. We did finally get some news. Apparently the webmaster at Godaddy.com made an atrocious error by uploading a picture of Danica in a drivers uniform. Not just any uniform but a uniform clearly with a NASCAR Nationwide Series logo and a JR Motorsports logo. This was quickly taken off the site but it was way too late. This photo was instantly uploaded by many people (and Jayski) and is the talk of the sport. Danica Patrick singlehandedly made a fool out of millions of people that tuned in to GMA just to hear this announcement and in turn made her fans that already knew of her signing the extension with Andretti a fool for insulting their intelligence. I have no doubt in my mind that Danica has already talked to Rick Hendrick and Dale Jr about driving for them in 2010. Why would the photo of her in the uniform be published if this wasn't the case. I for one don't care about this anymore. If Danica wants to go NASCAR racing and jump on that bandwagon then go right ahead. NASCAR needs another open wheeled driver that will come to NASCAR and dwell in the field of mediocracy just like the others (Villeneuve, Franchitti, Hornish) Why delay this announcement any further? She has the sponsor that is willing to waste million of dollars, her Indy Car owner obviously doesn't care because he would have already vetoed the whole thing if he did. There is just one hold up. Maybe Hendrick and Jr are coming up with there senses and not hiring her. But of course there's money to be made so I'm sure she will be racing for 25th year in the Nationwide Series
I'm not meaning to demean Danica. She has done well for herself in the Indy Car series but she hasn't done that well. She only has one win in 3+ seasons in Indy Car. She had her best finish in the standings in 2009 but miles behind Franchitti. Maybe she really is ready for NASCAR. NASCAR already has one diva in Denny Hamlin so having Danica who threw one of the biggest tirades after running out of fuel in a race a few years ago isn't such a bad thing.
If Danica accomplished one thing this morning she got attention on herself and got people wondering once again. It really wasn't Good Morning America afterall. It was definitely Good Morning Danica
